Sejarah Kedah Dua Millenia

It contains nine chapters that discuss the history of the state of Kedah Darul Aman from every aspect. It includes aspects of the sultanate, administration, economy, education and others from the traditional period to the present. The production of this book is also expected to give awareness to every group of people in Malaysia about the history of the state of Kedah Darul Aman more clearly.

Based on early records and notes from Arabic, Sanskrit and China, Old Kedah once had contact with all the countries concerned, namely Arabia, India and China. Kedah’s early relationship with the outside world actually began before AD. commercial, cultural and religious activities. This makes Kedah known as one of the centers of early civilization in Peninsular Malaysia. Apart from that, this chapter also discusses the geographical location of the State of Kedah and the districts found in this state. Based on Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa and At-Tarikh Salasilah Negeri Kedah, Kedah was opened about a hundred years before the birth of Prophet Muhammad SAW, that is in the year 407 AD, or 1000 years before the opening of the Malay kingdom of Malacca. The existence of this state is said to be contemporaneous with the existence of other kingdoms in the Asian continent such as the P’an P’an, Hunan, Cenla and Campa kingdoms which have now lost their names and been replaced by new names. Kedah is considered to be the oldest state in Malaya by many national historians.

The History of Kedah Two Millenia also discusses the system of government and administration in the State of Kedah as early as the existence of the Old Kedah kingdom that existed since the early civilizations of Southeast Asia. The governance and administration of the State of Kedah shows an early evolution with the inclusion of different religions. The influence of different religions led to administrative systems that were carried out differently from time to time since the beginning of the second century. Among the religions involved in the evolution of Kedah State administration are Hindu-Buddhist and Islamic religions. After the arrival of Islam, the administration of the State of Kedah ran smoothly and was led by the Sultan as the state ruler. However, at the beginning of the 12th century, the state of Kedah began to be colonized by the neighboring state of Siam. At this time, a minimal change can be seen in terms of the pattern of government carried out by the Sultan. At the beginning of the 18th century, the State of Kedah began to receive British intervention which has once again changed the way the state is administered. The defeat of the British to Japan in the Second World War, once again brought changes in the administrative system of the State of Kedah. Although the Japanese colonization in the State of Kedah for a short period, it has had many implications in the administration and course of social affairs in this state. After the withdrawal of Japan in August 1945, the British took over Kedah and Malaya in general’ British intervention continued until there was awareness among the community to gain independence. After gaining independence from the British on 31 August 1957, the State of Kedah became one of the states under the administration of Malaysia.

This book is also able to fill the needs of readers in an effort to know the history of the state of Kedah in depth. It is hoped that with the production of this book, the history of the state of Kedah Darul Aman will continue to be embedded without being forgotten by future generations.
