Like their predecessors, after encountering a number of trials and tribulations, they reach the holy mountain and return safely. In the novel, which basically follows the style of the previous story, the episodes as well as demons and monsters they meet on the way are completely new. Tsai Chih Chung’s cartoon series is not a chapter-by-chapter graphic description of the original novel. It is mostly a combination of the pilgrimage story with the cartoonist’s creative satire based on current events. In a way it inherited the style of the previous writer’s sense of humour. When describing supernatural beings or miracles he often slips in amusing touches, ascribing to the monsters human feelings and worldly wisdom. His exceptional sense of wit and humour makes the stories wacky enough to have you tickled pink.
